Amazing Person

  • In these difficult times, the most vulnerable needs plenty of support. I have been wondering how my sister is coping. She lives by herself and although on a disability care program, only family can give family love.

With the curfew of staying at home, travelling to see her was a difficult decision. Then it came to my attention that no matter what the authorities have in place for going outdoor, I had a very good reason.

I took the 6:00am train from Bairnsdale to Melbourne and there was only a handful of people on the platform. I had a cabin all by myself.

After about four hours of travelling, I knocked on her door. It was 10:30am. She took a while to answer and I was so pleased to see the door open and there she was.

"Hello Sylvio, how are you? Come in." We kept our distances and she had no objection. But my surprise was that she was more concerned about my health than I had time to ask her, "How are you coping with the virus".

My sister Brigitte was diagnosed with Schizophrenia when she was in her early 20's

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behaviour that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling. People with schizophrenia require lifelong treatment

The medication to-date is amazing compared to the years of trauma that she endured. Whenever I am in Melbourne, I always take out to lunch or for a drive. In January this year, she spent a few days at my place.

I could not take her out to lunch. We chatted for about ten minutes and I explained that it might be difficult for me to visit her in case there is a full lock down. She is coping very well. She is organised and has plenty of food in storage. Amazing person.

I'm so glad I went to visit her.  She knows that I am well.......

To catch my 12:00 train, I took a tram back to the CBD which looked like a ghost town.

The return journey back to Bairnsdale was equally quiet as I also had a cabin all by myself. It was a great time to chat with friends on Messenger. Thanks for those who sent me quiz, photos and chat.

An eight hour travel journey for ten minutes visit was so important for both of us.

We agreed when to see each other again, depending on the uncertain future of when thing will get better.
